BYU men’s soccer completes undefeated season to win 5th straight national title

BYU continued its national championship pedigree on Saturday with another No. 1 team officially earning the ranking.

In a busy three-day tournament, playing five games in three days, the Cougars became national champions for the fifth straight time.

Here are the results of the elimination tournament leading up to the national championship:

Round of 16: BYU 1, Miami (Ohio) 0.

Quarterfinals: BYU 3, Cal Poly 0.

Semifinals: BYU 5, Georgia Tech 0.

To cap off the tournament, the Cougars won dramatically in the national championship match as Ohio State took BYU to a penalty shootout, where the Cougars prevailed 6-5. That was the first game all season that BYU had been scoreless for 90 minutes.

Forward Talmage Woodhouse was honored as the tournament MVP. Alex Fankhauser, Chris Jenkinson, Isaiah Strong, and Aaron Jolley also were honored as part of the all-tournament team.

The Cougars were balanced in scoring throughout the tournament with four players tied in scoring with two goals each.

BYU men’s soccer is now the first team to win five straight national championships in College Club National Championship history and it marks the 12th national championship in program history.
