After a historic year for BYU men's basketball that saw the Cougars reach the Sweet 16 for only the third time since 1981, BYU has made it clear that coach Kevin Young will be the guy for years to come.
On Thursday, BYU extended Young for the foreseeable future, as reported by Shams Charania.
Brigham Young University coach Kevin Young has signed a new long-term contract extension with the program, sources tell ESPN, a new deal coming on the heels of a Sweet 16 run in his first season and the arrival of potential No. 1 NBA pick AJ Dybantsa.

“My family and I have loved our first year at BYU, being surrounded by great people, at a great university with shared values,” Young said in a press release following his extension on Thursday. “I’m excited to continue to build a program based on trying to help young men prepare for the NBA, win at the highest level and do it at BYU. This is an exciting time for all of BYU Athletics with Brian Santiago recently being named athletic director. I look forward to continuing to work with Brian and am excited to be in lock step with his leadership.”
When Santiago was introduced as BYU's newest athletic director on May 14, he told the media that extending Young was his biggest priority.
"First thing I want to do is make sure all of our coaches are locked in place at BYU ... starting with Kevin Young," Santiago said.
The Cougars are poised to have their highest preseason ranking in school history this upcoming season, likely ranked near the top-five. This comes just months after Young led his squad to the sweet 16 for the first time since 2011.
Between on-the-court success in the NCAA tournament, developing players like Egor Demin to go to the NBA draft, and recruiting top-level players like AJ Dybantsa to play in Provo, Young has forced his way into the top tier of college basketball coaches.
