BYU basketball notches back-to-back wins against top-25 opponents for the first time in a long time
TUCSON, Ariz. — BYU men’s basketball did something on Saturday night that hasn’t been done in nearly 40 years.
The Cougars picked up a win on the road against No. 18 Arizona. This is on the heels of their 91-57 blowout victory over No. 23 Kansas in the Marriott Center. This marked back-to-back wins against top-25 opponents for the first time since January 1988.
In 1988, the Cougars beat No. 12 Wyoming 83-67 and followed that with a win against No. 18 UTEP 81-71. The ‘88 BYU team went 26-6 on their season and ended up winning one game in the NCAA tournament but were knocked out by Louisville 76-97.
This BYU team just picked up its 19th win of the season, moving to 19-8. After being a questionable bubble team last week, these two top-25 and quad-one wins have bolstered their resume. As the Cougars look to the end of their season, they now sit firmly in a tournament spot.
BYU now has four games left before the Big 12 tournament — all having potential to be Quad 1 or Quad 2 contests. Next, the Cougars head up to Tempe to face the Sun Devils on Wednesday to finish their Arizona road trip.
