Bailey and Hernaez lead the way as BYU women’s soccer hosts Baylor Thursday night

BYU women’s soccer will be back at South Field Thursday evening for its second-to-last home game of the 2024-25 season.

Thursday’s matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Cougars and Bears have met three times previously, with BYU leading the series 2-1. The last time the teams faced off was a year ago on Sept. 21, when the Cougars defeated the Bears 4-0 on Betty Lou Mays field in Waco, Texas.

Multiple BYU players performed phenomenally in that matchup. One of those players is current BYU goalkeeper Lynette Hernaez, who had her first career start and shutout as a Cougar, posting a career-high six saves at the time.

Hernaez has registered nine shoutouts in her career, with four this season against Wisconsin, Boise State, Arizona State, and Kansas State.

Prior to the season, Hernaez came in at No. 40 for the Top Drawer Soccer preseason top-100 players.

She also received Big 12 Co-Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the first time on Aug. 21.

Last time of the Field

BYU earned its first Big 12 win on the road on Oct. 14 knocking off Kansas State 1-0 behind Erin Bailey’s lone goal.

"I think we've made a lot of progress this year," said coach Jennifer Rockwood. "It's our first win on the road this season, so we'll take it. We are deep into the season, with a few games left, and I think our young players have shown great improvements. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are on the right path."

Standout Players

Erin Bailey scored her fourth goal of the season in Monday’s win over Kansas State. Bailey has been on a tear lately, scoring goals in three consecutive games.

Signs of last year are showing from the 5-foot-5 sophomore junior forward/midfielder from Layton, Utah lead the Cougars in scoring through six games last season with five goals while coming off the bench.

Some may have called it the “impact sub.”

Before BYU, Bailey (from Layton High) was the top scorer in Utah 6A girls soccer in 2020 and 2021.
