PARIS—For years, the International Olympic Committee and the city of Paris prepared and hyped the 2024 Olympic Games, including altering and transforming historic and worldwide phenomenon landmarks to accommodate the various sports and large numbers of fans.
One of the most-anticipated venues has been the Stade Tour Eiffel, which is hosting beach volleyball. So, what is attending a match like?
To put it simply: thrilling.
“It [was] very electric and dynamic. . . everyone was having a good time,” said Philadelphia native Brad Ingraham.
The arena was built specifically for this location with picturesque views surrounding every vantage point, the pinnacle being the Eiffel Tower itself.
“I am an interior designer, so I picked [attending] this [venue] for the architecture not necessarily the sport, so I think this venue is absolutely insane. It is so cool.”
Some memorable matches so far have included competitions between Team USA vs. Team France as well as Team Spain vs. Team France.
“The women’s round France versus the USA game - the energy was wild,” Rutherford said.
Many American flags waved proudly in the air, but nothing compared to the sound level of Les Bleus. French citizens screamed, “Allez les bleus!” throughout the match as well as singing various chants for aces and blocks. The stands vibrated from stomping feet.
Fans dressed up as roosters symbolizing Team France as well as painted faces of bleu, blanc, et rouge and France definitely had home court advantage. However, the Americans did have Snoop Dogg cheering and dancing in the stands.
It was difficult for Team USA’s Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, but they defeated France’s Aline Chamereau and Clemence Vierira in two sets.
Following Team USA’s win, TCU’s own Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno competed for Spain against France’s Lezan Placette and Alexia Richard. They swept Les Bleus 2-0. It was an exciting time for Spain and for the Big 12.
“It was great to have the opportunity to play against the local team. We found our way to show our best game, to improve point by point and, of course, to enjoy it, enjoy every single point, set and, finally, the game,” Moreno said.
It was an incredible day at an incredible venue!
“[It’s] the best stadium in the world the best you’ll ever see, it’s a shame it’s only temporary,” said American Cameron Frye.
