4 BYU women's volleyball players earn All-Big 12 honors

BYU women's volleyball has been all around the Big 12 awards this week.

Not only were the All-Big 12 announced, but setter, Alex Bower also was honored as the Big 12 rookie of the week.

Four players were named to the All-Big 12 teams. Two of the team’s seasoned players, Claire Little and Brielle Kemavor, both made the All-Big 12 team. Two freshman, setter, Alex Bower and outside hitter, Elli Mortensen, were named to the Big 12 All-Rookie team.

Bower, was not only selected to the Big 12 All-Rookie team, but has also been selected as this week’s Big 12 rookie of the week. The setter has been having a phenomenal season. She leads the team with 1,102 on the season, being a vital part of this BYU team.

These players have been steady leaders on the team all season. Both Bower and Kemavor have been honored weekly by the Big 12. Bower was awarded Big 12 rookie of the week twice and Kemavor was honored as Big 12 defensive player of the week and co-defensive player of the week earlier this season.

Little has been a clear leader on offense, leading the team with 419 kills. Kemavor has been great on defense this season and leads the team with 164 blocks.

The conference selected 19 athletes to be on the All-Big 12 team and 10 rookies were selected for the Big 12 rookie team.

Mortensen was also selected for the rookie team. The outside hitter has put up 335 points this season to help the Cougars. She is the highest ranked freshman of the top 23 underclassman.

Last week, BYU went up against two other Big 12 opponents. The Cougars upset No. 6 Kansas. This four-set win helped BYU receive the No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament.

The Cougars are one of six Big 12 teams selected to go to the NCAA tournament. BYU will face Loyola-Chicago in Lafayette, Indiana, Thursday at 1:30 p.m. MST.
