2 Cougars score hat tricks in men’s soccer rout against Utah

BYU men’s soccer started its home season in dominating fashion Friday night, cruising past Utah 11-1 in a display of dominating offense.

Seven total Cougars scored a goal on Friday, including Brayden Gonder and freshman phenom Wes Starley, who both scored hat tricks (three goals apiece) to lead BYU at South Field.

Starley now leads the Cougars in goals on the season with five through the first three games.

BYU wasted no time getting into the scoring column against the Utes. Kyle Walbruch opened up the scoring in just the first 10 seconds of the match. From there, the floodgates opened and the Cougars scored a second goal only six minutes later.

BYU controlled the possession throughout the first half with great passing and communication. This led to three more goals being tallied to the stat sheet, making the score 5-0 at half.

The backline of the Cougars held strong throughout the first half with only a couple routine saves needed from goalkeeper Chris Jenkensen. However, in the second half, BYU gave up its first goal of the season in the 49th minute.

Utah cranked up its physicality to start the second half, catching BYU off guard. The Cougars quickly responded and proceeded to control the tempo of the game and the scoring kept pouring in, leading to another six goals in the second half.

The fans filled South Field for the home-opener and were not disappointed. The Cougars improved to 3-0-0 and will play Saturday at Utah State.
