Police Beat: Sept. 3-10

Information
A man reportedly purchased five BYU football tickets on Facebook Marketplace via Venmo for $150, only to find that the tickets were fake. The man was refunded by his bank. He said others had been scammed by the same suspect and the Facebook account has been reported. The incident is still under investigation.

An off-duty officer was contacted by a minor who reported being kicked out of her home by her mother and experiencing abuse from her father. The off-duty officer contacted Provo police to request a response and to take an official report.

Suspicious
An unidentified individual was seen entering the Helaman Halls Hinkley Building and leaving plastic bags containing advertisements and two Red Bull drinks at each door. There have been a series of similar unauthorized advertisements found around campus. The case remains under investigation.

A May Hall resident assistant reported receiving a suspicious text message. An officer reviewed the messages and contacted the suspected sender, issuing a warning for electronic communication harassment.

Motorist assist
With help from officers and students, an abandoned vehicle on South Campus Drive was moved safely off the street before a tow truck arrived to load it and take it to an auto shop.

Alarms
An alarm was activated at the BYU Creamery on Ninth. The new clerk had attempted to restart the computer but accidentally pressed the panic button, thinking it was a restart command.

A fire alarm was triggered in the Ellsworth Building due to burnt popcorn. The alarm was silenced, and the BYU fire technician was notified.

A carbon monoxide alarm went off at Wymount International Student Housing while a resident was using the stove. BYU police noted a high frequency of similar incidents in the area. The area was checked, ventilated and cleared.

Officers responded to nine alarms in buildings across campus over the weekend.

Lost and Found property
After hiking, a student contacted BYU police to report that he had lost his driver’s license, student ID, debit card and credit cards at the trailhead. The department filed a lost property report.

A lost wallet found in Lot 4 was turned in to a BYU police officer. The owner is from out of state and did not have any BYU-related information. Attempts to locate a contact number for the owner were unsuccessful.

A backpack was reported missing from the Cannon Center. The bag was discovered with another student, who was reported to have taken the bag by accident. The backpack was returned to its owner.

Welfare check
BYU police received a report that a student used the SafeWalk app but did not check out after reaching her destination. The officers made contact and determined she had fallen asleep and confirmed she was safe.

Officers and BYU Counseling and Psychological Services performed a welfare check and evaluation on a student at Heritage Halls and determined the student required professional assistance at a hospital.

A father asked BYU police for a welfare check on his daughter, a BYU student with diabetes, after his monitor alerted him that her blood sugar was low and he couldn’t reach her. Officers found her asleep, with low blood sugar. She took measures to stabilize her condition with no further medical assistance.

Medical
An officer and BYU EMS responded to a report of a woman in pain at the Richards Building. When they arrived, they found her on the ground, complaining of discomfort. She was treated and released.

A student experienced lightheadedness and fainted in the Cougareat of the Wilkinson Student Center. The student said they had not eaten that day. The student was treated by BYU EMS and released.

A woman in Heritage Halls woke up with chest pains. Her condition did not require hospitalization. She was advised to rest and call back if her symptoms worsened.

A man reportedly hit his head on the pavement and may have lost consciousness during a bicycle accident near Helaman Halls. The man was found conscious and alert with road rash on his face and shoulder. He was treated at the scene and released.

An ambulance was dispatched to the Wilkinson Student Center following reports of a person who had fainted and possibly experienced a seizure. The student was treated at the scene.

Hit and run
Security footage revealed a black Ford F-150 appearing to strike a Honda while attempting to park next to it. An officer located the Ford’s driver and issued a citation for leaving the scene of an accident.

Minor damage to the side and wheel of a vehicle in the Riviera Apartments was reported. No camera footage or witnesses have been identified.

Traffic offense
A scooter rider sustained minor injuries after being involved in a crash. She said a vehicle cut her off, causing her to fall. The driver of the vehicle couldn’t be found and there was no security footage of the incident.

A driver in a BYU vehicle reportedly honked and waved their arms at a student riding a scooter on the road. An officer identified the vehicle and notified the department about the interaction. A follow-up will be completed.

Gas smell
A resident of Wymount Terrace noticed a gas smell around his water heater. While the fire captain detected levels that were considered low, Enbridge Gas was contacted due to the presence of a baby in the apartment. The Fire Department determined it was safe to remain in the apartment.

Citizen contact
Officers spoke to a bundled person sleeping on the sidewalk near J Dawgs. She said she was homeless, tired and needed rest. She gathered her belongings and left the area.

Missing person
Multiple officers and security responded to the WSC following a missing person report. The person was found outside in their vehicle.

Property damage
A van parked near the tennis facilities was damaged, possibly by a skateboard, based on the height and nature of the marks left on the van. Security footage is still being reviewed.
