Police Beat: Oct. 16-22

Suspicious
Officers responded to a report of skateboarders potentially breaking into vehicles. When reviewing camera footage, there was no evidence of vehicle burglaries.

A resident assistant of Heritage Halls Building 11 reported an adult male dressed in all black clothing with a motorcycle helmet walking around the building and waiting near the entrance, acting suspiciously. Officers patrolled the area and were unable to locate the suspect.

A complainant reported a male individual beginning to follow her on the south side of the Life Science Building. He continued to follow her near the J Dawgs restaurant and for several blocks until she ran to a nearby church building. He waited outside, and she was able to leave through a different door with friends.

The women’s cross-country coach reported that the parents of two athletes received calls about their daughters being arrested and needed bail money to get out of jail. An officer verified that it was a scam call.

Accident
A stolen vehicle entered the roundabout on East Campus Drive and 1100 North at high speeds, before striking the curb, becoming airborne, breaking a large tree in the center, and then landing on the opposite side. The suspect was taken into custody.

A vehicle struck a parked vehicle in Lot 37. Both owners were emailed driver exchange forms.

A hit-and-run was reported in Lot 37. Based off of paint transferred to the vehicle, the suspect vehicle has a white car. The case continues to be investigated.

A vehicle struck a parked vehicle in Lot 59. Drivers exchanged information.

A traffic accident occurred near Heritage Halls. Information was exchanged.

A vehicle backed into a passing vehicle in Lot 41. Information was exchanged between the two drivers.

An individual approached an officer about accidentally brushing against a parked vehicle while attempting to park. The officer was able to get in contact with the owner of the vehicle and information was exchanged.

A student riding a Onewheel device was crossing when a vehicle entered into a driveway. In an attempt to avoid the vehicle, the student hit a separate vehicle exiting the driveway. All people involved were okay, and surveillance footage is under review.

Trespassing
Students were found practicing lacrosse on the North University Field without scheduling the field. Officers explained the rules and the students left.

An adult male was reported to be trespassing in John Hall. He was identified as the father of one of the residents, whom the student does not want contact with. Officers were unable to locate the individual.

Medical
A female student stood up too quickly and accidentally hit another student in the mouth, puncturing her head with his tooth. She was assessed and no further medical attention was required.

A female student had a seizure in the Jesse Knight Building. She was assessed and released to a parent.

A male individual had a knee injury at the Richards Building. After being assessed and treated, the patient was transported to the hospital via private vehicle.

A female was found unresponsive and having a seizure at the Helaman Field entrance. After regaining consciousness, she and her two dogs were transported to her place of residence.

A female passed out in the TNRB. She was transported to a nearby hospital.

Nuisance
A female student reported a suspicious man with a suitcase on campus asking her questions. He was located by police and was found to have no reason to be on campus.

Sex offense
A female reported a male to be taking inappropriate pictures or videos. Upon review of surveillance footage, it was obvious that he was using his cell phone to take inappropriate images up her skirt. The victim was emailed a witness statement to complete, and the investigation lieutenant and victim’s advocate were informed about the situation.

Lost property
A student reported her AirPods lost or stolen on the second floor of the LSB. She later found them in the Building Care Lost and Found.

An international student requested a Lost Property report for a lost SIM card. The documentation was required to purchase a replacement from her home country.

A student reported his mountain bike to be stolen from outside of the Wilkinson Student Center. Surveillance footage showed that university security had impounded his bike since it was left abandoned and unlocked near a bench outside of the WSC.

A complainant reported the loss of his black, bi-fold design wallet. He reported to have last had it near the LaVell Edwards Stadium and was advised to check several lost and found locations.

A complainant reported the loss of a wallet. The officer took the report and advised the complainant to contact the Provo Police Department as well.

Unsecure premises
An exterior door at the Hinckley Center was reported to be unsecured. The responding officer attempted to use multiple keys, but the door would not lock.

An officer observed multiple open gates to the Helaman Field. The officer checked the area and secured the gates.

Welfare check
An officer was sent to conduct a welfare check on an employee at the BYU Culinary Support Center. Contact was made with the subject before the officer arrived and no further actions were taken.

A welfare check was requested on a student after she walked from her car in Lot 45 to Helaman Halls and her father couldn’t reach her. After getting in contact with his daughter, the father called dispatch and the request was canceled.

Property damage
A report of vandalism to the bell tower was made. Officers took pictures of the damage and spoke with a University Grounds employee.

Threatening
A complainant reported hearing his friend being threatened by his ex-girlfriend’s father. The Title IX office was informed and is investigating the relationship between the couple.

Information
A complainant reported a male to be wearing a paper dog mask and pounding, barking, yelling and making throat-slitting motions at her door at 12:40 a.m. After reviewing security footage, it was determined that the complainant knew the man and other individuals involved, and that it was just a prank.
