Animal problem
Ducklings were reportedly stuck in a drain close to the Tanner Building. Police and a grounds employee worked to rescue the baby ducks with a net and return them to their mother.
Officers were notified of another report of trapped ducklings. Police attempted to save them, but the ducks were pushed deep into a pipe and could not be reached.
Trespassing
Security footage showed three males leaving the Missionary Training Center grounds. One was reportedly on the University Press Building roof. The three left after MTC security called the police. The suspect has since been identified.
A door was left propped open at the Student Athlete Building, and a man was captured on security footage entering around 6 p.m. He remained on the building’s third floor until around 11 p.m., using the bathroom for several hours and resting on a couch. He has since been identified.
Information
A student posted several signs with personal opinions around the Smoot Administration Building, Wilkinson Student Center, and Museum of Art. These posters were not threatening, but the individual was given a warning for trespassing. The BYU banning committee and BYU security will investigate further.
A report of harassment came in about a male who was frequently seen at the Cougareat. Officers did not identify any criminal activity, and the report has since been filed for informational purposes.
Lost property
An individual’s wallet and keys went missing at the NCAA track during a track meet. The owner was advised to check the WSC Lost and Found.
Traffic
A parked vehicle in Lot 49 was damaged, and the offender made no attempt to contact the person or leave their information. Police are reviewing surveillance footage.
There was a small accident in Lot 30. Both drivers exchanged information, and there were no further issues.
A vehicle sustained damage that was noticed while entering Lot 26. The driver was uncertain of how or when the damage occurred.
A vehicle was being parked in Lot 37 when it hit the vehicle adjacent to it. Owners have exchanged contacts, and there were no further issues.
Medical
Medical professionals and a police officer cared for a woman experiencing difficulty breathing. After using an inhaler and medication, her condition improved.
Welfare check
A male was seen attempting to gain access to a construction area and pacing back and forth. Police arrived to find that he was experiencing mental health difficulties and hearing voices. He had also reportedly called 911 after allegedly hearing domestic violence. He left the scene without issue when asked.
A student didn’t clear their SafeWalk near Heritage Halls. Officers responded and found the student safe.
Police responded to a report of an individual who seemed to be having mental health difficulties at the WSC. The individual in question had already left when they arrived, and a scan of the area was conducted.
Duress alarm
An employee at the WSC accidentally triggered a duress alarm. Officers arrived and found that everything was in order.
Citizen contact
A suspicious person inside a vehicle was reported in Lot 52. Upon investigation, there was no suspicious activity involved and the reported person was simply attempting to sell the vehicle to someone else.
Fire
A resident at Wymount International Housing reported an issue with an appliance plug. No danger was found, but a resident had used a fire extinguisher on a smoking crock pot. The resident was found and confirmed safe.
Smoke was reportedly rising from a woodchip pile near the Ellsworth Building. Provo Fire arrived at the scene and found that it was steam, not smoke. The scene was cleared and officials determined the weather conditions likely caused the phenomenon.
A report came in about a gas smell at the Life Sciences Building. Provo Fire tested the area for carbon monoxide, but the test came back negative.
A fire alarm was triggered at Wymount Terrace after a cooking incident. No danger was found, and residents were attempting to ventilate the apartment.
A low airflow low pressure alarm went off in the Engineering Building. Officers found no sign of danger.
Unsecured door
A door was found propped open at the Brewster Building. Police responded and reported the scene was safe.
Unsecured gate
On a routine patrol, an officer found that the gate to the NCAA track was unlocked and open. After a search, no one was found in the facility.
Alarms
Officers responded to eight alarms and a handful of lockouts this week.
