Police Beat: May 23-29

Citizen dispute
A conflict broke out between two parties at the Life Sciences Building. One was upset at the other for not wiping off their whiteboards after doing schoolwork. When police arrived, the complainant was alone and the other party had already left.

Suspicious
A male and a female were reported arguing in Lot 37 before going their separate ways. Police found the male, who explained that he was there with his family and girlfriend playing sports. According to him, the argument was over another girl he had been dating. Police received her phone number to confirm she was OK.

Three children in T-shirts and basketball shorts were allegedly seen climbing a fence near the generator by the Life Sciences Building. Upon searching the area, no one was found and no damage had been done.

A suspicious vehicle was seen with its engine running outside the Engineering Building for more than half an hour. Officers found the owner, and the vehicle was secured.

A suspicious event was reported at Wyview Park when a custodian found paper towels stuffed in a ceiling light fixture in a bathroom.

Found person
A lost child was reported on campus, and police were unable to find him after the first search. The child’s mother reported him found about an hour later.

Welfare check
Police responded to someone with possible suicidal intent after receiving a third-party alert. The individual had been in contact with the National Suicide Hotline, and the police’s attempts to contact them by phone and text were unsuccessful. They found that the individual was in an adjacent jurisdiction and alerted them to continue the process.

An individual was reported sleeping in Lot 46. A welfare check was conducted, which came back negative. The individual then left.

Traffic
A BYU-owned vehicle backed into an unoccupied, parked car. Officers helped with the information exchange.

A reported accident at Lot 38 resulted in an estimated $1,200 in damages. The involved parties will resolve the matter civilly.

A car was sideswiped in Lot 49 during a High School Graduation. The trees limited security footage, and the offending vehicle had fled the scene. A note was found attached to the hit vehicle reading “I am so sorry, someone came around the corner and hit me into you.” The case is still under investigation.

Someone reported brushing a parked vehicle with her own in Lot 49. The owners were made aware of the situation.

A delayed hit-and-run was reported at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The vehicle was damaged, and camera footage could not identify the offending vehicle.

Trespassing
Police arrived at the North University Fields when someone was reported trespassing. An athletics coach was already there and confirmed that it was just a lacrosse player who was early for practice.

An unauthorized group was reported playing soccer on the closed North Intramural Fields. Officers found it was a group of BYU students, and they left after a trespass warning was issued.

Medical
A youth sustained a small head injury at the Richards Building, and Provo EMS arrived to care for the boy. He was released after evaluation.

Authorities arrived at the intramural fields after someone reportedly broke their collarbone. Upon arrival, the individual was already in the hospital.

Officers responded to the Marriott Center after a Life Alert activation. Provo Fire and EMS found the individual, who said it had been activated accidentally.

Fire
A carbon monoxide alarm had reportedly gone off several times at Wymount Terrace. BYU Fire didn’t find any signs of hazardous conditions, and it was attributed to faulty equipment.
