Police Beat: July 2-7

Unsecured door
An officer spotted several open doors at the Joseph F. Smith Building. After inspection, only the janitorial staff were inside and nothing seemed out of place. It is suspected that air pressure held them open.

Found property
An officer on patrol was approached by a family that turned in a found wallet. The owner was contacted and promptly arrived to take possession of it.

A group of teenage girls found a black wallet near the Creamery on Ninth and gave it to police. The owner was contacted.

Disturbance
Someone was reportedly yelling and making a disturbance as people camped out to prepare for the parade on July 4. Police contacted him. The man claimed his brother had yelled at him but that he had made no disruptive response. Police discovered that he had an active warrant from West Jordan City.

Welfare check
An officer was dispatched to Brigham Square to support an older gentleman who was walking around confused. The man was gone when the officer arrived.

A caller at Riviera Apartments reported their roommate was showing signs of mental health struggles and self-harm. Officers talked to the roommate, and they said they were doing alright but had experienced issues in the past. A plan was made to support them.

Traffic
A complainant returned to their parked car in Lot 19 to find new damage done to it. It was supposedly struck by the car next to theirs, which was no longer present when they returned. However, surveillance footage showed the damage was already present when the complainant first arrived.

A man informed police that his wife struck a BYU box vehicle with her car while pulling into Lot 50 to pick him up. Campus Police were contacted, and they filed a minor report.

Alarm
Officials arrived to Riviera Apartments after a caller reported smelling smoke. No unsafe levels of smoke or suspicious activity were detected.

A CO alarm was activated at Wymount Terrace 8E. Residents claimed they had recently installed a new AC unit, which was causing the issue. Officers determined there was indeed carbon monoxide in the apartment and opened windows to ventilate it.

Fireworks
Four males were reported launching fireworks near the Bell Tower. However, upon arrival, police could not find anyone matching their description.

Lost property
A complainant informed BYU Police that they had misplaced their black Fidelo wallet. A description of the wallet and possible locations where it was left were provided, and the individual will be contacted if it is found.

After attending a church meeting, a non-student reported losing their wallet. Police gave them instructions on how to check the several lost and found spots on campus. They were also given instructions on how to cancel their bank card.

A complainant reported their backpack had been stolen. Security footage showed a custodial worker confiscating it for safekeeping. It was promptly returned to the owner.

Noise complaint
Housing and Resident Life reported a complaint to police. Officers didn’t detect any loud noise upon arrival and spoke to the building residents. The building's resident assistant arrived and said they would manage the situation.

Suspicious
A possible homeless individual was reported inside the Life Sciences Building. They were allegedly checking the doors of nearby buildings. Officers could not find the individual after a search.

Extortion
An FSY participant sent an inappropriate photo on their phone and was later contacted by an unknown individual who told them they would expose the photo if not paid $200. The participant’s parent called the police, and work is currently being done to resolve the matter.

Information
Division of Child and Family Services reported to police child abuse and neglect regarding an FSY participant. The participant reportedly sent a text message containing a sexual innuendo to 15 other participants. The situation is under investigation.

An FSY participant was picked up early by parents after juvenile activity involved hazing and assault. The event is currently under investigation.

Juvenile problem
FSY participants at Heritage Halls were roughhousing at night when one pulled another’s pants down. The perpetrator’s parents were contacted and both victim and suspect were interviewed.

Abandoned 911 calls
Several calls were made to police at the Stadium of Fire event July 4. Officers investigated a potential emergency related to the calls.

Animal problem
A dog was reported alone in a car in Lot 20. Officers arrived to find the dog was safe with the windows down and the car in the shade.

A lost fawn without its mother was reported near the Missionary Training Center. Police arrived but couldn’t find the deer.

Medical
A woman reported experiencing stomach pain and was treated by EMS personnel. She was released into the care of family members with plans for follow-up treatment.

A student injured their ankle while playing volleyball. Responders arrived and treated the student, and told them to seek urgent care if the situation worsened.

An infant with burn marks was reported at Wymount Terrace. Responders found red marks, like a sunburn, on the child’s back. However, they noted that the child was calm and didn’t appear to be in pain. It was determined they did not need urgent care.

BYU Police and Provo EMS arrived at Helaman Halls to assist a girl who reported not feeling well. EMS personnel treated her.

A nine-month-old infant had an allergic reaction after eating eggs. Her mother gave her Benadryl to calm the swelling on her face, and she was reportedly in stable condition when responders arrived. The mother was advised to consult their pediatrician.

A man was cared for by BYU Police and Provo EMS at Y Trailhead. He was conscious but unresponsive, and he was transported to the hospital for further care.
