
Assault
During commencement, a former BYU staff member entered the Brimhall Building. The victim was grabbed by the upper arms and shaken, with the former BYU staff member blaming the victim for her husband’s dismissal from the university. The victim reported pain in the upper arms, and the case is currently being handled by detectives.
Criminal Mischief
An officer discovered a broken window and a graffiti-covered wall on a building at East Campus. A previous report of graffiti had been filed. It's unclear if this vandalism was new or had previously gone unnoticed.
Several ice cream vending machines at Helaman Halls were vandalized, resulting in the food melting. Police are reviewing security camera footage to track down the culprit.
Part of the East Campus Wasatch School was defaced with these mysterious words: “MOEK Sohsak.” The scrawl, written in black charcoal ink, has since been removed. It’s suspected that the perpetrator entered through the unlocked south side gate
Weapons Offense
A juvenile reportedly had a weapon at the NCAA track. Officers determined it was a BB gun. No threat was posed, and the youth’s parents took possession of the firearm.
Information
Confidential divorce documents were allegedly posted on the internet by the BYU Law Library. The complainant contacted BYU Police and was told to seek help from the district court.
Theft
A motorized scooter was stolen at West Campus after being locked to a bike rack. Police have no lead on a suspect, but they will continue investigating to return it to its rightful owner.
A bike was stolen at WP. Officers don’t yet have information on a suspect and have not been given a serial number to track.
Several items, including a blue cooler and a cooking skillet, were stolen from the MBA lounge in the Tanner Building. Video camera footage is currently being reviewed to gain a lead.
Suspicious
Officers were notified of a man on the Y Trail carrying an axe. There was no apparent threat, and officers did not locate the man after the call.
Accident
A hit-and-run occurred at BYU Lot 45. The vehicle’s front bumper was badly damaged. The complainant’s report was filed, and they are being helped.
There was a minor traffic accident in Lot 45. No one was harmed, and both parties exchanged information.
There was a small accident in Lot 50; no serious damage or injury occurred.
A student crashed their motorized scooter on Campus Drive when a vehicle in front of them made a left turn. Upon falling, he sustained road rash and was treated by BYU EMS. The driver, who didn’t see the crash, left the scene and has been identified.
Suspicious Package
A suspicious suitcase was reported at the BWRB. Officers found it contained women’s clothing, likely left behind by an attendee from the recent Women’s Conference. The owner later contacted BYU Police and the case was returned.
Medical
During an intramural athletics game in the Richards Building, someone sustained a knee injury and was taken to the hospital by Provo EMS.
A student at the Wilkinson Center reported neck pain from a previous car accident. Provo EMS gave her a neck brace, and she was transported to Utah Valley Hospital.
Alarm
An fire alarm sounded in Heritage Hall 5. The resident assistant and an officer entered to find the apartment empty and free of danger. The alarm went off again not long after, and the fire technician was dispatched to investigate.
A door alarm was triggered in the Student Athletic Building. A custodian had accidentally set it off, and the situation was resolved.
A fire alarm was reportedly triggered by someone cooking at Wymount Terrace.
Several door alarms were triggered at the Ellsworth Building. Officers found the scene to be undisturbed.
A door alarm was triggered at the ISB. Officers reported no problems, but said the door in question has posed problems in the past and may have a faulty alarm.
Fire
Officers responded to a report of a gas smell near Campus Floral. Upon investigation, the source was discovered to be a nearby storm drain.
