On Sept. 10, right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot at a speaking event on UVU campus. Following is the order of events as we know them. This article will be updated as we learn more.
Wednesday, Sept. 10
11:52 a.m. - Suspect spotted driving on campus.
12:00 p.m. - Charlie Kirk begins his American Comeback Tour event on UVU campus.
12:23 p.m. - Kirk is fatally shot in the neck moments after an audience member asks him about the number of mass shootings in the last 10 years.
12:24 p.m. - Orem Police are called.
12:39 p.m. - Police arrive on the scene.
12:48 p.m. - UVU sends out first alert informing students of the shooting and reported that a suspect is in custody.
1:20 p.m. - UVU sends out an alert that campus is closed and classes are cancelled until further notice.
1:45 p.m. - Kirk is in critical condition in the Timpanogas Regional Hospital.
2:12 p.m. - BYU notifies students and staff in Y-alert, stating "We are closely monitoring the situation following a shooting at an event on UVU campus today. At this time, BYU campus remains open with increased police presence."
2:40 p.m. - Andrew Kolvet, Kirk's spokesman, made a statement confirming Kirk's death. Soon after, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Kirk had passed away.
5:40 p.m. - Utah Gov Spencer J. Cox held a press briefing and said “To whoever did this, we will find you, we will try you and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law. And I just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.”
6:32 p.m. - UVU alerts students and staff that there is no ongoing threat to campus. Campus remains closed until Monday, Sept. 15.
Thursday, Sept. 11
Rather than visiting 9/11's Ground Zero on the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, J.D. Vance and his wife canceled their plans and visited with Kirk's family in Salt Lake City. Vance escorted Kirk's casket onto Airforce 2 headed to Phoenix, Arizona.
8:41 a.m. - Trump announces he will soon award Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
8:55 a.m. - Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls updates media, FBI reported the weapon, a high-powered bolt action rifle, was found in a wooded area near UVU. The FBI had already received more than 130 tips at this time.
9:58 a.m. - FBI Salt Lake City posted on X pictures of the suspect, asking for help from the public to identify the person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting.
10:45 a.m. - FBI announces award of $100,000 for finding the shooting perpetrator.
10:00 p.m. - The suspect is taken into custody, after a 33 hour public manhunt.
Friday, Sept. 12
7:00 a.m. - FBI Director Kash Patel holds a press conference, updating the public on the investigation and officially announces that a suspect is in custody. He starts by stating "This is what happens when you let good cops be cops." He also announces that the FBI has over 11,000 leads, and intends to follow every single one through.
Tuesday, Sept. 16
Tyler Robinson virtually attends his hearing in court, and is formally charged with seven counts:
- Aggravated murder
- Felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury
- Obstruction of justice (on Sept. 10)
- Obstruction of justice (on Sept. 11)
- Tampering with a witness
- Violent offense committed in the presence of a child
The prosecution intends to seek the death penalty. Robinson remains in custody with no bail until his next hearing near the end of September.
