Temple Square organist celebrates 40 years of music

Salt Lake City is home to one of the most iconic instruments in the world — the pipe organ in the historic Tabernacle on Temple Square. But you might be less familiar with the organist who makes the music come to life.

For the past 40 years Linda Margetts has been one of the main organists for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.

She has accompanied the choir at many prestigious events, but her favorite event to play for is the annual and semi-annual sessions of general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“I see the Lord’s hand in that meeting and I see the music helping to get the word to the world,” Margetts said.

When she’s not playing in famous venues for thousands of people Linda and her husband Bert spend time with their six children and many grandchildren.

“She loves the gospel more than anything, so I think it’s so fitting that she is an organist for the Church,” Alex Pierce, BYU Student and Linda’s grandson, said.

Linda hopes that her music will bring joy and peace into the lives of her listeners.

“There is no better way to help another person’s inside emotions and inside thoughts and whatever then to present a beautiful piece of music that they can dwell on,” Margetts said.

Linda is one of five current temple square organists. One can listen to her play in broadcasts of general conference, Music and the Spoken Word or perhaps even at the Tabernacle.
