The 195th Semiannual General Conference begins with messages of hope and empowerment

It was a rainy day at Temple Square, but that didn't stop the flood of people coming to watch the Saturday morning session of the 195th Semiannual General Conference.

It was the first conference session since the passing of President Russell M. Nelson and speakers started the day by offering messages of hope and empowerment.

Oscar and Linda Alguira, conference attendees, said that coming to general conference is a family tradition they regularly look forward to.

"We came to the conference because this is our family tradition to come and support our leaders and get inspiration for what they want us to do," Alguira said.

During the conference, Elder Brik V. Eyre invited church members to look to God as they come to know their identity.

“We must seek validation vertically, not horizontally; and as we do, we too can boldly proclaim, 'I am a child of God,'" Elder Eyre said.

Other speakers gave invitations to seek reconciliation through repentance, apply the truths found in primary songs and turn their hearts to God.

Brielle Jex said she enjoyed Elder Gary E. Stevenson’s talk about peacemakers.

"I really liked the peacemaker talks and how it invited us to be kinder in general," Jex said.

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf upheld his unspoken tradition of talking about airplanes and flight. In the same talk he testified of each individual’s divine identity.

“You are a blessed being of light; the spirit child of an infinite God," Elder Uchtdorf said.

Linda Bawden, a fan of Elder Uchtdorf’s message, encouraged individuals who want answers to watch general conference.

“If they want to know more about the true gospel and modern day revelation, they can come to the conference. Conference will give us modern day revelation from the Lord," Bawden said.

Thousands of people will fill the conference center again on Sunday to hear from other Church leaders. In coming days, transcripts and recordings of the talks will be available at Churchofjesuschrist.org.
