Provo’s June Audio Studio Offers a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Music Creation

Located in Provo and tucked away behind other buildings, June Audio Recording Studios' discreet entrance could easily be mistaken for a private residence, but inside, the sounds of music production are in full swing.

Kyle Henderson, a seasoned audio engineer, has been producing music since 2007 and joined June Audio in July of this year.

"Recording and producing it, yeah, I guess there’s a few days, at least for the fast ones," Henderson said. "Then sometimes they can take weeks, you know? Every song has a different journey," he said.

Henderson adds that creating music is a magical experience, but it requires patience “ to be able to do that.”

The studio is the brainchild of Scott Wiley, who has worked in studios since high school.

“I’ve been working in studios since I was in 10th grade,” Wiley said. "I worked in studios all through high school and in college."

He now owns June Audio, a studio packed with over 60 guitars, multiple drum kits, an array of microphones, miles of cables and much more.

"Everything here I own," Wiley said.

Since opening in 2019, June Audio has produced thousands of songs, with Wiley’s own career spanning even more.

"I looked up on this app, and as far as my name having worked on something, it was 3 billion streams or something," Wiley said. "I don’t even know."

So, why did Wiley choose Provo as the location for his studio?

"I love Provo and the music scene here," Wiley said. "I love the music scene that a college helps nurture and the new people that come all the time."

For both Wiley and Henderson, it’s not just about the technical side of making music, but the emotional and personal effort that goes into it.

"There’s so many things that it takes for a song to be born," Henderson said. "There’s so much effort emotionally and vulnerability that goes out into every song that’s put out."
