In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Provo Recreation Center hosted an event to help encourage girls to join athletics.
Girls of different ages attended visited the Provo Recreation Center to participate in a variety of sports. The Recreation Center offered basketball, soccer, flag football and volleyball.
"Our Girls in Sports Day event was created to help girls who may not be used to playing sports or interested in playing sports," Sia Gomez, the event director, said.
The event allowed some girls in attendance to experience playing basketball and soccer for the very first time.
"Girls can play sports," Gomez said. "Let them know that they're able to play and that we're here for them."
The girls who participated were eager to talk about the experience.
"It was so fun. The sports we did were basketball, soccer, volleyball, and this racing thing ... and dancing," Sybil Dalton, one of the participants, said.
As a bonus, the girls made many friends along the way.
"This is very good for helping people that barely ever make friends to make friends," Bella Cornia, another attendee, said.
