The Provo City Library at Academy Square offers escape rooms for all ages.

"Participants are ‘trapped’ in a room, and cannot get out until they solve a variety of puzzles and clues leading to the key that will let them ‘escape’ the room," reads the library's escape room page.

The escape rooms were spearheaded by several librarians from both the adult/teen and children's departments at the library. The room themes are based on the librarian's interests and the interests they see in Provo.

There are different rooms and difficulties to choose from, according to the library's website:

  1. Sherlock Holmes (high difficulty, recommended for ages 18+)
  2. School of Magic (medium to high difficulty, recommended for ages 18+)
  3. Escape the Eighties (medium to low difficulty, recommended for ages 14+)
  4. Prankster Escape Room (low difficulty, recommended for ages 8+)

"The School of Magic Escape Room was our first escape room and is probably the best-loved. There are a couple of easter eggs hidden in the puzzles that people may or may not find even if they solve the room," Breanne Gilroy, the adult and teen services manager, said.

The escape rooms take 30-60 minutes to complete and work best with groups of four to eight players, according to the website.

“We would also like to emphasize that these escape rooms are fun and challenging but also, it's still a library, and escape rooms happen in library study rooms,” Erika Hill, Provo City Library's community relations manager, said.

Members of the community enjoy the free activities regularly offered at the library, Hill said.

"Offering escape rooms is just one of the free, engaging programs that we offer the community," Hill said. "One of the great things about these on demand programs is that users can schedule them on their own time.“

Requests to play the library escape rooms must be received at least one week in advance. To request an escape room, complete the request form online or call the reference desk at 801-852-6661 to have a librarian take a request over the phone.

“Learning about the escape rooms is a good way to remember that there’s probably more going on at your local library than you realize,” Hill added.

Other library resources can be found on the library's website.
