Provo City Library hosts "Magic Mornings"

Provo library hosts magic mornings

The Provo Library isn't just a spot for college students to study or kids to pick out their next read. It's also a hub for events that bring the community together.

Even the cloudy weather in Provo isn't stopping hardcore Magic: the Gathering fans from meeting up for their monthly Saturday morning game sessions.

Magic: the Gathering holds the title of the oldest trading card game. It still remains popular today.

Local Magic player Mckoo Staples has been a fan for the last twelve years.

“I started playing infrequently, casually, just off and on, but then really got back into it four years ago,” Staples said.

Not only is playing the game a full-time hobby — it also makes Staples a full-time collector with thousands of magic cards. He said he has nearly 2,000 cards to his name and frequently competes in tournaments.

“So there’s a tournament that I do, like I said, every month. It usually lasts through the whole month," he said.

Allison Smith is the coordinator for adult and teen events at the Provo Library. She said she is a big fan of the community that the event brings together, even though she is not a player herself.

“I love that we can provide a free, low stakes, very casual playing environment,” Smith said. “We've got some amazing volunteers that fill in the gaps of knowledge that I don't have.”

Smith said she is excited to see where the group’s future is headed.

“We hope that it continues growing and thriving,” Smith said. “If it continues growing, we may have to go to a bigger room.”

These Magic players know how to have a great time together. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, these Saturday mornings are perfect for anyone looking to find a welcoming community full of friends, magical creatures and plenty of fun.
