President Biden delivered his farewell speech on Jan. 15 from the Oval Office and warned Americans about what he sees as urgent challenges to the present and future of America.
Amid discussions of climate change, artificial intelligence and holding social media platforms accountable, Biden repeatedly returned to the theme of the abuse of power and wealth.
"Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead," Biden said.
Biden also reflected on the importance of democracy, asserting it must be "defended and imposed, moved in every way possible," while acknowledging that the values tied to democracy are constantly under test.
"Every day I’ve kept my commitment to be president for all Americans, through one of the toughest periods in our nation’s history," Biden said.
The president began his address by updating the public on the situation in Israel and Gaza, noting a ceasefire and hostage deal had been brokered by his administration between the Israeli government and Hamas. Biden shared that this plan, which he laid out last May, will be continued by the incoming administration.
He also stressed that his team had ensured the transition of presidential power was smooth, keeping the incoming administration "fully informed" because, as he put it, “that’s how it should be, working together as Americans.”
While Biden refrained from mentioning former President Trump by name, he did touch on the importance of holding future presidents accountable for their actions. "No president is immune from crimes he or she commits in office," Biden said.
Alongside warnings and reflections, Biden highlighted several of his administration's accomplishments. These included the creation of 17 million new jobs, the building of new roads and bridges that ensure access to clean water, enacting new gun safety laws and more.
"I’m so proud of how much we have accomplished together," Biden said. He added that he hopes for a "peaceful and orderly transition of power."
