Dry club redefines Orem’s alcohol-free party scene

The Afters, an alcohol-free club in Orem, is changing the party scene for young adults in Utah Valley.

Clubs that don't sell alcoholic beverages are known as "dry clubs." They have become very popular in Utah County because of the high population of Latter-day Saints in the area, Seth Odesanya, a club-goer, said.

"Utah's known for being, like, 'no party stuff.' This new club is meant for all these college students that (have) nothing else to do," Odesanya said.

The Afters offers live DJs, mocktails and a late night menu — without the booze.

"On a Saturday, everybody goes home. On a Sunday — it's a Mormon state — they go to church. But here? (We're going to) turn up every time!" Odesanya said.

While Utah's strict liquor laws present challenges for bar owners, The Afters is sidestepping the issue by cutting out alcohol entirely. This approach attracts guests who prefer a sober party atmosphere, Jaylen Guy, another clubber at The Afters, said.

"I think people that are young just want a place to go hangout and meet new people, meet new faces and have a good night," Guy said.
