President Dallin H. Oaks, President of the Quorum of the Twelve, did not announce any new temples during the 195th Semiannual General Conference.
During the Sunday afternoon session of General Conference, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expected to hear the announcement of new temples at the conclusion of the session. This had been a recurring event throughout the presidency of President Russell M. Nelson, former president of the Church.
President Oaks, the concluding speaker of General Conference, began his talk by addressing this expectation.
“We will not announce any new temples at this conference,” President Oaks said.
He went on to explain more of the reason for this decision, noting it was made with “the approval of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.”
“However, with the large number of temples now in the very earliest phases of planning and construction, it is appropriate that we slow down on the announcement of new temples,” President Oaks said.
Several people took to social media to express their feelings.
“We’ve got to keep up with the ones already announced or under construction. Makes sense, not expectable though,” @DiegoLibPens said on X.
Rick Phillips made a comment on X.
“Temple Department: 'Whew, thank you for letting us catch up,'" Phillips said.
The number of temples announced at each General Conference has dramatically increased since the beginning of President Nelson’s ministry in April 2018.
President Nelson announced 200 temples during his presidency, with the highest number, 20, announced during the April 2021 General Conference. That remains the record for the most temples announced in a single session of General Conference and the highest total announced by any prophet in the history of the Church.
President Nelson passed away on Sept. 27, just a week before the 195th Semiannual General Conference. The next president of the Church is not expected to be announced until after President Nelson's funeral on Oct. 7.
