The Folklore Bookshop, a new bookshop in Midway, opened on Oct. 9 and had its grand opening on Oct. 26. It has since gone viral for its nods to Taylor Swift.
The store's owners, Lindsey Leavitt, Audrey Lind and Alison Russel, have been working on opening the bookshop for the past two years. Leavitt said the store is a combination of all of their skills.
For example, Leavitt is an author of young adult fiction. Some of the books she has written include "North of Super Nova," "The Pages Between Us" and the "Princess for Hire" series. Lind is a librarian at Wasatch High School, and Russel has retail experience.
The bookshop has recently gone viral with TikToks posting that the store is Taylor Swift themed. One video accumulated more than 90,000 views. Leavitt said she would describe the store as more Taylor Swift 'coded' than themed.
The bookshop has a ''Tortured Poets Department'' in the corner of the store. The area has a restored royal typewriter that is the same model as the one Taylor Swift uses in her "Fortnight" music video. The typewriter is free for bookshop visitors to use. The ''Tortured Poets Department'' corner also features a bookshelf full of literary works that Taylor Swift has alluded to in her songs. Some of the titles include "The Scarlet Letter," "Leaves of Grass," "Romeo and Juliet" and works by Virginia Woolf.
The store also has a small Taylor Swift display that contains children's, chapter and coffee table books about Taylor Swift, as well as one about the Kelce brothers.
The bookshop is even hosting a Merry Swiftmas event on Dec. 13, which is Taylor Swift's birthday.
Leavitt explained the bookshop's name Folklore, had more to do with the word's actual definition than the fact that it's the title of Taylor Swift's eighth album.
The Oxford Learner's Dictionary defines folklore as "the traditions and stories of a country or community."
The bookshop features a folklore table that changes themes each month. The November table's theme celebrated National Native American Heritage Month with books featuring Native American stories as well as books written by Native American authors.
Leavitt stated the bookshop is a general-interest independent bookstore that aims to meet the community's needs. She went on to explain she does not worry about a book just being a bestseller when choosing what to stock the store with.
The bookshop sells books, stickers, small gifts and more. It also sells mystery books wrapped in contact paper with a paper detailing key aspects of the book attached.
The bookshop hosts several community events each month. The shop has already hosted multiple author events featuring authors such as Ally Condie, Stacie Denetsosie and Ally Carter.
According to their Instagram, they are hosting a book club, morning storytime and a Santa meet-and-greet this month.
