New app aims to connect people over shared meals

A local student is launching a new app designed to bring people together over food.

Making new friends in a new town can be hard. UVU student Alex Neilson noticed this issue and set out to create an app that would bring people together.

Suppr is an app focused on helping individuals meet new people over a shared meal. The idea came to life when Alex Beikson noticed the loneliness epidemic.

“I looked into it and realized that people have a really hard time with social isolation. Looking into that, I decided this was something I needed to get into and try to tackle," Neilson said.

Reflecting on his experiences, Neilson realized that sharing meals had the biggest impact on his social life and personal connections.

“That was one of the ways I built most of my friends and have the most connections… and I thought, why don’t we do this every day?” Neilson said.

With that realization, Suppr was born. The app matches users into groups, then allows them to vote on several local restaurants to meet at.

The app is currently in its marketing and launch phase, but has had a few trial test runs. Trevor Nye was among the first to try it.

“I met people that I probably wouldn’t normally talk to. It was cool because I feel like eating with people really sets an interesting mood that lets people connect in a way you can’t get from just normal conversation," Nye said.

Nye says he has stayed in touch with several people he met at the dinner, and believes the app is a meaningful way to meet new people.

“As the app rolls out, I hope that people are able to use it to make new friends. It's about connecting and expanding," Nye said.

Suppr can be found in the app store and online.
