In Provo, custom-made engagement rings are all the rage.
Many stores in Provo offer the option for prospective buyers to customize their own rings, adding unique flair and signature style to stand out from the crowd.
Darrell Mauerman, the director of Forge Jewelry Works, talked about trends he has seen.
“Since lab-grown diamonds have become more and more popular and the price is more and more affordable, we’re selling larger amounts,” Mauerman said.
Solitaire rings, meaning rings with only one large diamond, are a common favorite. Colored gemstones are also gaining momentum, with pink diamonds among the most popular choices.
Patrons feel as though this customization process allows them to express their own personal love stories.
Aubrey Hacking, a sales representative at Wilson’s Diamonds, explained the shapes, styles and cuts that are popular this season.
“Vintage styles, but redefined in a modern way,” Hacking said.
Multiple celebrities have demonstrated this art deco style, the most notable being Taylor Swift.
“If I were to choose the shape of 2025, it’d be a tough battle between elongated cushions and marquis,” Hacking said.
The Forge offered a sneak peek into the engagement ring creation process. It starts with a 3D model, then the ring is 3D printed, added to a resin mold, and then the mold is filled with the desired metal.
Once the band is ready, the painstaking process of shaping the metal around the selected gemstone begins.
Richard Beach is a goldsmith with more than 40 years of experience.
“I literally have done over 50,000 engagement rings,” Beach said.
After a final polishing, the ring is ready to shine.
Proposal season, according to a wedding planning website, the Knot, is anytime between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, with more than 40 percent of engagements occurring during these months.
Whether looking for a timeless classic or an original showstopper, there is no shortage of options for custom rings in Utah Valley.
