Halloween celebrations are in full swing in Downtown Provo, and the Buzzards and Bees’ Music Festival hosted the beloved high school tradition, with a spooky twist.
More than 20 years ago, a BYU student started hosting Goth Prom with a few of her friends more than 20 years ago. For the past six years her sister has kept the tradition alive.
“It’s just a fun party and it’s easy to say ‘put on all black and show up.’ It’s not hard to just say come as you are — but in black, or with eyeliner,’” Alex Baughn, host of Goth Prom, said.
Baughn said part of the reason for the event’s success comes from the stark contrast it offers to what you usually see in Downtown Provo.
Last year the party hit capacity at Velour Music Gallery, so this year they expanded to other businesses along University Avenue.
Moss Pizza was set up for temporary tattoos.
The restaurant Quiero Más hosted “scary-okey” and set up a photo booth where guests could get their picture taken while holding a live snake.
Many prom goers have made it a tradition to come every year, saying that the inviting atmosphere makes Goth Prom one of their favorite events of the Halloween season.
“The environment is so welcoming that I think you just have to keep coming back, ” Ez McCormick, a prom guest, said.
Goth Prom will return next year as part of the Buzzards and Bees Music Festival.
