Students in Provo at one time or another have agreed upon one thing: that local restaurants close too early in the day. However, there is a new late-night option with a unique name.
Lettuce, tomato, cheese and special sauce. This is the Boring Burger. But what makes the Boring Burger so special?
“Well, it's just boring, right?” said Ian Johnson, Co-Founder of the Boring Burger.
The Boring Burger is a new student-run restaurant in Provo, Utah. Johnson explained why people should buy such a "boring burger."
“Can they do it themselves? Maybe. Do they? No. So, they should just come, get one and they'll keep coming back.”
He said the Boring Burger has been around for longer than you might think.
“On my mission, I was cooking burgers every day pretty much for the people we were teaching and my companions,” said Johnson.
McKay Marshall, also a Co-Founder of the Boring Burger, shared his side of the story too.
“Ian called me, like, the following morning after we had kind of both decided maybe we're not going to do that and he said, 'Let's go to Costco right now and buy a bunch of stuff and let's sell burgers today and see how it goes,'" Marshall said.
When Johnson talked about the sauce, he said, “It’s a salty flavor. It's a salty sauce."
A local customer, Savannah Fluhman, joined in on the action.
“I was like, wait, this kind of tastes like In-N-Out," said Fluhman. "And then every time I’m kind of like, I actually kind of prefer this over In-N-Out, which is crazy!"
The Boring Burger started out by selling burgers right on their front lawn. This eventually grew into a delivery service. Marshall said they have delivered 45 burgers in one night.
From being sales friends to business partners, Marshall and Johnson built their business after noticing many local restaurants close too early.
“We saw a market for late night food in Provo. There's not a lot of it,” said Marshall.
The Boring Burger is open from 5 p.m. to midnight. Customers call, place an order, sit back and wait for their food to arrive right at their door.
