BYU alum Macy Schmitt and her sister Madison Egli plan to launch their brand Girlyish Skincare with hopes to increase young girls' confidence and protect their skin.

According to Schmitt and Egli, they noticed a lot of skincare products had the potential of damaging and leaving long-lasting effects on the skin. Thus, they endeavored to create a simple product line with safe ingredients.

“Beauty should be fun, but it should also be safe,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt graduated from BYU's Marriott School of Business with a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurial management. Schmitt explained their goal is for both young girls and their parents to be comfortable buying their products.

“A big thing for us was clean and non-controversial,” Schmitt explained. “We looked into every single ingredient and if it had controversial options or talkings online, then we didn't want it in there.”

“One of the major things we avoided in our products were endocrine disruptors,” Egli said. Egli has a master's degree in public health from Oregon State University.

According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, “Endocrine disruptors are natural or man-made chemicals that may mimic or interfere with the body’s hormones, known as the endocrine system.”

Girlyish Skincare’s products are also free of parabens and fragrances and have no retinols or substitutes and harmful chemicals.

“We realized that many skin care companies, even the ones targeted for young girls, are so confusing,” Schmitt stated. “We wanted to keep it very basic and very easy so girls who are just getting into it can start there.”

According to Schmitt and Egli, Girlyish Skincare’s product line will include a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen.

Girlyish Skincare will also sell lip balm, “because everyone loves a good lip balm,” Egli said.

Though Girlyish Skincare’s products were created with young girls in mind, it is not youth specific.

“Anyone can use it as their base routine,” Schmitt said.

Saane Vehikite, a licensed master esthetician shared her thoughts on youth skincare.

“It's great for them to have a skincare routine, but you also have to be careful,” Vehikite said.

Vehikite shared that some stronger ingredients youth should avoid are beta hydroxy acids, retinoids and retinol.

Keeping young skin safe is only one of Schmitt and Egli’s goals; they also want to empower young girls to feel confident.

“Any way we can support that with our community and help girls feel confident and understand their value and grow their self-image is our goal behind it,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt and Egli both recall what it was like to go to middle school and high school with acne. Though Schmitt was more interested in makeup than Egli, both said they remember having confidence issues when it came to their skin.

“I wasn’t the girly girl, but I still had one zit and I thought that everybody was looking at me,” Egli said. “Skincare is kind of a neutral ground, right? It’s not makeup. It’s an avenue that we can reach all girls (through).”

Schmitt and Egli said Girlyish Skincare will launch in November and their products will be available for purchase then.
