90-year-old woman makes headlines as oldest graduate in BYU history

Fairview, Utah native Oneita Sumsion made history in June 2020 as BYU's oldest-ever graduate when she received her Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the School of Communications at 90 years old. According to the Daily Herald, the previous record for the oldest graduate in BYU history was held by Fred Paulson Jr., at age 80 in 2018.

Misconceptions about sexual assault abound in Utah

Rape is the only violent crime in Utah that has a higher rate than the national average according to the Health Indicator Report of Sexual Violence from the Public Health Indicator Based Information System. Other violent crimes in Utah such as aggravated assault, robbery and homicide are half to three times lower than the national average.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I was taught about the law of chastity and sexual purity since I was a young child. Within Church culture, there seemed to be an overemphasis on the idea that sex was bad. The idea of sex being something divine, beautiful and sacred seemed to be rarely mentioned.

BYU grad student Julya Barnhurst and Chandler Turner were engaged on December 20, 2019. By early 2020, they had already booked a place for their wedding reception in Sandy. When COVID-19 hit, Barnhurst and Turner had no choice but to cancel their reception.

Parents can take simple steps to prevent drownings this summer

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, three people drowned in Utah reservoirs on June 20. Two of the adults who drowned were swimming without life jackets. Another 37-year-old man drowned in Pineview Reservoir while trying to retrieve his son. On June 27, a 25-year-old man jumped into Pineview Reservoir to help his brother. He was airlifted to a local hospital and was in critical condition as of June 27, the date the article was published.

'Period poverty' affects millions of women, girls globally

Globally, 3.5 billion women have monthly periods. According to charitable organization Days for Girls, over 500 million women and girls, nearly 25% of all menstruators, experience 'period poverty.' Over 500 million women do not have access to feminine hygiene products.
