Resident assistants recommend dorm essentials for BYU students

It's important for students to get the right dorm essentials for their dorm, whether a student is living in Heritage Halls, Helaman Halls or somewhere off-campus.

Molly Cline, a former resident assistant at Helaman Halls, shared what essentials students should bring to the dorms.

“I think some of the most important things to bring with you to your dorm during fall semester would be sheets, laundry detergent, a good coat. You’ll need a good coat as those winter months come,” Cline said.

Other items she mentioned are rugs and fun posters.

Dallin Gibbs, a third-year resident assistant at Helaman Halls, noted another essential dorm especially for those are staying at Helaman halls.

“A robe is actually really good just because since most of the halls here have a community bathroom. Towels are nice, they work great, but a robe feels a little more secure, a little more comfy,” Gibbs said.

Besides regular items, there are also other essentials to consider, including a personal laptop for studying on and off campus, an internet router depending on where you live, and kitchenware like pots and pans to cook and bowls and plates to eat from.

For those with limited cooking options ... meals plans are required for students living in Helaman Halls and optional for Heritage Hall residents.

Students don’t have to break the bank to buy some of these essentials. A twin sized bedsheet costing only 11 dollars and 60 cents is available on Amazon.

Students can also rent a computer at BYU courtesy of BYU IT and Surplus at the Ellsworth Building as long as they have 6 credit hours for both fall and winter semester.

But it is not just material goods that are essential to a great fall semester.

“I think a good attitude and a willingness to meet your roommates, meet the other people in your hall, (and) meet people in your building is really important for Helaman Halls and making it a really good semester,” Cline said.
