Every week in the BYU Music Building, the band Just Khakis keeps to a strict practice schedule, preparing for upcoming shows, gigs and competitions.
“We started playing some live music at weddings until we saw the Boardwalk in Orem. They were holding a Battle of the Bands, and we thought, well, might as well apply,” Just Khakis singer Christian Affleck said.
The band has competed together in several competitions but said their jazzy vibe makes them unique.
“I think the instrumentation and the sound is definitely unique. You don't see a lot of bands that sound like this, especially here in Provo," band founder TJ Neyman, said.
The band changed their name from Jazz Khakis to Just Khakis after wanting to branch to other music genres.
“We call it soul pop, what we do. You bring in the little soul and funk and jazz and into mainstream pop,” Affleck said.
Just Khakis members said their attire has become a symbol of their brand.
“I always think it's funny because khakis are about the most boring color, a pair of khaki pants. It does not get more boring than that, but then our music is the opposite of that," Affleck said.
Band members said although being in a band is not always the most lucrative business, the fans make it worth it.
“I've found that I can make a difference with music. It's not just because I enjoy it, it's because the music we write, I hope, impacts somebody,” Affleck said.
