Police Beat: Nov. 5-12

Agency Assist
BYU Police were contacted by a detective from the Fort Worth Police Department to help locate and contact a BYU student who was identified as a victim of aggravated assault within their jurisdiction. The BYU police met with the victim and presented a lineup of potential suspects and documented the results accordingly, which will be sent to the Fort Worth Police Department.

Threatening
A student at Stover Hall was receiving threatening emails. She said she was messaged by a man on TikTok who offered to give her $1,000 to help pay for her rent. She deposited a check for that amount, but the man had been sending her threatening messages and disturbing images, demanding she return the money. Officers contacted the suspect to inform him that law enforcement was involved and advised the girl to block him. The suspect immediately stopped contact. The officers continued to check to ensure the funds were recovered and the threats stopped.

Vehicle Burglary
A BYU student employee reported that multiple valuable items had been stolen from a work vehicle overnight. The door was unlocked, and the suspect was able to steal multiple valuable tools. Officials are investigating the situation, have information on the suspect and expect to recover all of the stolen items.

Extortion
A person reported that they had fallen victim to a scam and sent $9,000 to a suspect under the false impression it would resolve a warrant. They called the bank afterwards and were advised not to involve the police until after they had attempted to recover the funds. The report was received 16 days after the incident. Officials are investigating the situation.

Suspicious
Officers responded to the Riviera apartment complex on reports of a burned Marijuana odor. The smell was coming from the same area of some previous natural gas leaks. After checking the area, officers did not find any issues.

An officer was dispatched on a report of a suspicious person trespassing at the University Parkway Center. A bishop called to report a homeless person who had come into their ward activity and started eating several of their cookies. When the officer arrived, the individual had already left and could not be located.

An officer responded to the J. Reuben Clark Building after receiving a report of a suspicious male, around 40 years old, wandering around the area. The individual was described as having a dark beard and wearing a Cookie Monster hat. Police found him and had him leave campus.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man at the intersection of Cougar Blvd. and Canyon Road. The complainant said he was acting strangely and asking questions about BYU, which scared him. Officers found the man near the indoor practice facility and determined he was behaving abnormally. The man requested a ride to the Slate Canyon area in Provo.

Someone at Helaman Halls reported hearing a female scream from the street. Officers came to the area and questioned a couple who said they did not hear anything. They continued patrolling and did not find any signs of distress or suspicious activity.

Medical
An officer, and BYU EMS were dispatched to the Smith Fieldhouse after a man got a hamstring injury while playing intramural sports. EMS treated the injury on the scene.

Welfare Check
Officers responded to Helaman Halls after receiving a report of a woman experiencing a panic attack and possibly self-harming. After locating her, they determined she did not need medical attention and connected her with campus support services.

An officer checked on a student who had been repeatedly missing classes and had a professor notice signs of self-harm The student admitted to having self-harmed and is now receiving help.

Property Damage
Police responded to a property damage incident after a BYU vehicle hit a gate. Officers documented and reported the incident.

Animal Problem
An officer responded to the William H. Snell building after receiving a report of a dog acting erratically in a van. When the officer arrived, the dog was sleeping peacefully in the passenger seat, and the officer found no issues. No further action was taken.

Nuisance
Officers received a report that three boys were causing a disturbance at Heritage Halls. When the officers had arrived, the boys had already left. Officers conducted an extra patrol of the area.

Agency Assist
An officer from the Weber State PD contacted BYU Police about a sexual assault case that occurred on their campus on Nov. 5. A BYU officer searched the description of the suspect's car, a red Jeep Wrangler with a Colorado plate, but was unable to locate the vehicle.

Trespassing
Two women were playing the pipe organ in the Music Building without authorization. The students gained access through a door left open by building staff.
