Police Beat: June 5-11

Citizen contact
An FSY participant reportedly drove a stranger's truck through a parking lot. The event was recorded, and officers determined he was trying to impress a friend by showing he knew how to drive a manual transmission. The juvenile was released into the care of an adult.

An unidentified individual was reported discarding urine in a trash can in the Brimhall Building. The trash can has now been placed in view of a security camera, and custodial staff reminded the responsible custodian not to sort through it for recycling.

Trespassing
A forced-door alarm sounded at the Heating Plant. Security footage showed three hooded males leaving an underground tunnel around 4 a.m. Security is reviewing the footage to better understand how they gained access.

Property damage
A car was hit by a soccer ball at a soccer camp. Officers made note of the damage and contacted Risk Management.

Traffic
A campus vehicle was hit in Lot 4. Surveillance footage revealed the offending car and the owner was contacted by police. The owner’s daughter, a student, was reported to have been driving, and no charges were filed.

Medical
BYU Police and Provo Fire Department responded an individual who was reported suffering from sunburn and heatstroke due to prolonged exposure at Bear Lake. They were advised to go to the hospital and were transported there by a roommate.

A student at the Life Sciences Building was reportedly experiencing an issue. BYU Police and EMS responded to treat the person, determining they were in good condition.

An individual was experiencing chest pain at the Wilkinson Student Center and was attended to by BYU EMS and Police. EMS evaluated them and determined law enforcement assistance was not needed.

Two players collided at the Richards Building field, and one sustained a knee injury. BYU EMS arrived to evaluate them, and the victim declined further care.

BYU EMS responded to a medical issue at the Cannon Center. A football camp participant was possibly experiencing a diabetes-related issue. Parents were notified and arrived to care for the child.

Agency assist
Trespassing was reported near the old Wasatch Elementary School. A group of juveniles was identified near the abandoned apartments at 910 N. 900 E., and they were reported to Provo Police. Officers arrived, and the juveniles were released to their parents.

Suspicious
An unidentified individual was found near the B66 building, supposedly wandering around and “looking for something to steal.” The individual was a white male with bushy hair wearing a black Carhart t-shirt. The caller included that nothing seemed to have gone missing.

A male was reported near Lot 30. A police officer responded and found a man panhandling nearby. They were violating no laws and were on public property, so the officer left the scene.

A teenage male was reported walking through the J. Reuben Clark Building and entering offices. An employee confronted him and obtained his first name, then left the premises. Nothing was reported tampered with or stolen.

Theft
A black electric bicycle was reported stolen. The event supposedly took place at some point between February and early June, though no details about the bike were disclosed.

An electric scooter was reported stolen at Wyview. The complainant said she had fastened it to a railing and later found it missing.

Abandoned 911 call
Officers responded to 685 E University Parkway after several abandoned 911 calls came through in the area. Upon inspecting the scene, nothing was found out of the ordinary.

Information
A parent reported their child’s phone was lost or stolen at the Smith Fieldhouse. The child was participating in a basketball camp, and the director was contacted. The director informed authorities that the phone had been returned and would be given to the child.
