Welfare check
A caller reported a man sitting on a bench in the McKay Building, staring straight ahead and carrying a Milwaukee tool bag, which struck them as odd. Staff later said he’d been seen working in the building before, and although officers couldn’t find him, nothing concerning came of it.
An officer responded to Brigham Square alongside a security sergeant to check on a woman who was dancing and acting strangely. Upon arrival, another officer was already speaking with the woman and determined she was not causing any problems.
Officers responded to the west gate of the Ellsworth Building, where a concerned employee reported that a woman had been sitting on the ground outside for several hours with frost on her head. She was homeless, and officers transported her to the Food and Care Coalition.
Officers responded to Heritage Halls following a report that a student may be suicidal. Upon contact, the student denied suicidal thoughts and reported ongoing communication with his support system. He was provided with information about Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for additional support if his situation changed.
Officers checked the Y Trail after someone reported what looked like a blinking flashlight on the mountain, but the flickering turned out to be headlights moving behind trees. Hikers coming off the trail said they hadn’t seen anyone in trouble and dispatch confirmed no distress lights.
Theft
A delayed report was filed regarding a stolen rental vehicle used by BYU Athletics, which had not been seen since at least last week. The vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. It was later recovered in San Leandro, California, where an individual was arrested. The case remains under investigation.
An officer followed up with a Wymount Terrace resident who said their motor-assisted bike went missing sometime between mid-December and Jan. 24. With no serial number, footage, or suspect info there are no leads at this point.
A bike theft was reported via phone from the south side of the Harold B. Lee Library. Video footage shows a suspect taking the bike from a rack and leaving campus, but the individual has not been identified. The bike could not be listed in NCIC, and its serial number is unknown.
Lost/Found property
A member of the BYU athletic department contacted the BYU Police Department to report several lost keys. The missing keys are identified by the following key numbers and copies: 9125 (copy 9), 9766 (copy 13), 9237 (copy 7) and 8838 (copy 4).
A BYU officer responded to the Smith Fieldhouse for a found wallet. The officer retrieved the wallet, located the owner in Wyview Park and dropped it off at the owner's residence.
Officers responded by phone to a report of a lost 4400 master key for the MCKB. The complainant last had the key about a month ago and has not been able to locate the key since leaving work.
Accident
BYU Police took a delayed crash report from Lot 59 after a driver said she hadn't been able to reach the other motorist she exchanged info with at the time. The officer is finishing the report and trying to get in touch with the other driver.
A BYU officer responded to a minor property damage accident at Lot 6. The officer documented the incident and provided both parties with exchange documents.
Officers responded to a minor accident in Lot 39. Both parties declined a report, and no information was exchanged.
Officers responded to a late-reported hit-and-run crash in a parking lot near Lot 6. Video footage of the suspect vehicle and driver was collected, but the suspect has not yet been identified.
Fire – Gas smell
Officers, along with BYU EMS and Provo Fire, checked out a gas smell on the west side of the Eyring Science Center and found it was just the gas meter venting small amounts as designed. Fire crews said their meters didn’t pick up any measurable gas, and there was no safety concern.
Trespassing
Missionary Training Center security stopped two BYU students who tried to hop the west fence dressed as missionaries so they could surprise a sibling inside with a soda. They apologized after being warned about the seriousness of it, and security gave them a ride off the property.
Officers responded to West Campus after a report of a man under the bleachers on the east side of the field. The individual was identified with an out-of-country ID and was issued a trespassing warning before being asked to leave the property.
Officers checked Heritage Halls Building 6 after residents said three non-students were knocking on doors and filming whoever answered, but the group was gone by the time police searched each floor. The resident assistant was told to call back if they returned.
Unsecured door
Officers found a man sleeping under the east side field bleachers at West Campus and, while checking the area, discovered an unlocked storage room holding new electronic equipment. They secured the door to prevent any theft.
Medical
Officers responded to the Harman Continuing Education Building after a student passed out twice. Provo Fire personnel arrived simultaneously, evaluated the patient and she was later released to her roommates after being medically cleared.
An officer responded to the Richards Building Swimming Pool for a student with an arm injury. The student was playing volleyball and hyperextended their arm. BYU EMS and Provo Paramedics provided medical attention and released the student.
Officers went to the Wilkinson Student Center after a report of someone being treated for a self-inflicted cut to the finger, but campus medical staff determined the injury didn’t need further care. A medic was able to stop the bleeding on the person’s left index finger before they were released.
BYU Police responded to Lot 33 after a bicyclist collided with an electric scooter rider, resulting in some injuries. Officers facilitated the exchange of information between the two students without any incident.
An individual injured their knee at the RB. Medical personnel responded and took care of the incident. The student was hurt while playing intramural sports.
Officers and medical staff responded to the Life Sciences Building after a woman fainted during an education lab. She was checked out and cleared to continue.
Sick person
An officer and BYU EMS responded to a sick student at the Indoor Practice Facility. EMS evaluated the student and suggested they see a doctor. The student chose to wait for her husband and left with him.
Alarm
An officer checked a carbon monoxide alarm at Wymount Terrace, but Provo Fire found no CO and cleared the scene. No one reported feeling sick, and nothing unusual was detected.
An officer checked a fire alarm at WT Building 3A after a tenant’s smoke detector started beeping with a “fire” warning, even though dispatch hadn’t received any alarm signals. Nothing seemed wrong inside, and housing staff were called in to fix the faulty detector.
Suspicious
A student reported steam rising from the grass near HL Stover Hall, prompting an officer to check it out. It turned out to be a broken hot water pipe underground, and the Campus Heating Plant sent someone to handle the leak.
Officers went to the Riviera Apartments after a report of marijuana odor, but the smell was gone when they arrived. Someone said they’d seen someone smoking and going inside an apartment, but the hall advisor found no signs of drug use, and the tenants denied it, so a warning was issued.
Nuisance
Officers responded to a noise complaint at WT Building 4A and contacted the tenants playing loud music. They were advised of the complaint and the city's noise ordinance hours. The tenant apologized and agreed to turn off the music for the night.
