Jared Halverson emphasized scripture's transformative power as part of the Wonder of Scripture lecture series on Jan. 17.

During the lecture, Halverson introduced the concept of “situational translation,” explaining how scripture meets readers where they are and invites them to experience God’s teachings in a deeply personal way.

“This is not just academic,” Halverson said. “Scripture is pastoral and real. It’s here to help us connect with God and each other.”

Halverson explained that scripture is not merely a historical text or a work of literature, but a living force meant to inspire us. He encouraged students to see scripture as a source of strength and guidance in their challenges.

"We must wrap ourselves in scripture the way Jesus wrapped our injured flesh around His perfect premortal spirit," Halverson said.

The lecture left a significant impression on students, many of whom expressed a deepened appreciation for scripture.

“I loved how he made it clear that the scriptures are for our day. They are meant to be written on our hearts,” Spencer Cederlof, a freshman and first-time attendee, said.

Sophomore Abigail Phillips rearranged her class schedule for the opportunity to attend the series. She expressed her appreciation for the lecture's focus on building a relationship with scripture.

“It’s an opportunity to deepen our connection with Christ and the scriptures,” Phillips said.

Faculty from BYU’s Maxwell Institute praised the series for its high attendance and return visitors. Co-organizer of the lecture series and Laura F. Willes Research Fellow Kimberly Matheson, noted the series’ success in introducing new study methods to students while creating meaningful connections to the scriptures.

“It’s incredible to see students engage deeply with scripture and leave feeling both inspired and capable of studying in new ways,” Matheson said.

With its growing popularity, faculty members at the Maxwell Institute have tentative plans to continue the lecture series next fall.

"As long as it’s impactful, we’re excited to keep it going," Kristian Heal, another co-organizer of the series, said.

The lecture series will continue to be held each Friday for the rest of the semester.
