Humor U prepares for next show

Members of Humor U, Brigham Young University's stand-up comedy club, are getting together to fine-tune their auditions and polish their routines ahead of their next comedy show.

The club's next standup show will be held in the Karl G. Maeser building auditorium on March 7 and 8.

"Something that's really important for us is that Humor U is the club where you don't have to be an official member to perform," Felicity Morris, co-president of Humor U, said. "Anyone can perform, as long as you audition."

Meetings typically include a lesson on comedy writing, writing time and a place to pitch jokes for upcoming auditions and performances.

Caden Sterner has been a club member for 3 years and found the club through an open mic event. Sterner was introduced to stand-up comedy by his father, he said.

"I can remember telling him, as a kid, maybe I could be a stand-up comedian kind of thing. And he didn't like, you know, hearing that at first — right? Because he was like, 'You know, there's greater aspirations of life,'" Sterner said.

Now, Sterner uses his time at Humor U to honor his father and make others laugh.

"It's something that I felt a connection with him because he passed away, and so I used humor as maybe even a coping mechanism," Sterner said. "I tried to see the good in the world — comedy is kind of about (that), right? The good in the world that sometimes you can talk about very difficult things. People are laughing. That's the beauty of the art form."
