They're inseparable from the game: a BYU legacy covered in frosting. The fan-favorite CougarTail sported an exclusive Royal Blueberry flavor for the BYU-Utah men's basketball game on Saturday, March 8.
“Seeing as how we have kind of a rivalry with them, we’re going to do something fantastic, so bright blue,” Chef Jared Wilkey said.
Wilkey is the head chef at BYU's Culinary Support Center. He focuses exclusively on CougarTails, dubbing himself the CougarTail King.
Wilkey and his team began working early Friday morning to produce thousands of CougarTails for the weekend. They also sold the massive blue donuts at the baseball and men's volleyball games.
“I have had no one tell me that it was bad. Literally everybody has told me they liked it. Several people were running to tell me that they loved it,” Wilkey highlighted.
Fans flocked to concessions the minute the gates opened. Three thousand CougarTails quickly flew off the racks, selling out before the game even started.
Two students in the ROC section, Amelia Margetts and Hazel Green, purchased CougarTails and fell in love.
“We love the new CougarTail, it is so yummy!” Margetts exclaimed.
“They’re better than the normal flavor," Green added.
The CougarTail Mascot even took to the court to celebrate the debut of the new flavor.
General Manager of Concessions Andrew Jacobsen said his favorite donut is the blueberry fritter. It was his idea that fueled the Royal Blueberry CougarTail's creation back in January.
Concessions has yet to decide whether they will bring the hit flavor back for future games.
