School of Family Life professor publishes research on family favoritism
Alex Jensen, a professor at BYU’s School of Family Life, published a study in the American Psychological Association’s Psychological Bulletin about the science behind having a “favorite child.”
Jensen’s research found that parents tend to show more favoritism towards daughters than sons, treat youngest children with greater leniency and give their oldest children greater autonomy. His study also found that parents are usually self-aware of any own biases they display towards their children – biases that the children, themselves, usually fail to notice.
