BYU alumni organization Cougs Care announces pregame tailgates to support communities

The BYU alumni service organization, Cougs Care, announced six service-focused tailgates to be held before BYU football road games in North Carolina, Colorado, Arizona, Iowa, Texas and Ohio.

Last season, fans donated thousands of pounds of food, books and school supplies at Cougs Care tailgates. Fans attending BYU road games this season can stop by the alumni pregame Cougs Care tailgate to give back to the communities hosting each matchup. This year’s focus is literacy, hunger relief and community support.

BYU study finds learning students’ names boosts belonging

In a recent BYU study, students completed a survey at the beginning and end of the semester and reported an increased sense of belonging in classes where instructors used their names.

The study, conducted by BYU assistant professor Chelsea Romney, found that when students' names were used, they reported being more motivated to participate in class and to give positive class ratings. According to the study, both students and professors can benefit from learning each other's names. The BYU app includes a flashcard feature that allows professors to review student names and faces from class rolls. Romney began her research with the goal of creating more inclusive teaching practices.

Justin Dyer appointed editor in chief of BYU Studies

Justin Collings, BYU academic vice president, announced that Justin Dyer will replace Steven C. Harper as the editor in chief of BYU Studies, part of the Religious Scholarly Publications organization on campus.

Dyer has received several awards for his research, including BYU’s Young Scholar Award. He earned a doctorate in human and community development from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and was a postdoctoral fellow at Auburn University. Dyer has been a professor at BYU since 2010.

His current research focuses on ways religion may be helpful to individuals, families and societies. BYU Studies is an academic journal that publishes articles, personal essays, poetry and other works informed by the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
