BYU engineers partnered with Toyota to improve the Toyota Sienna minivan's safety, durability and sustainability.

Together they created a new welding technique for the minivan's sliding doors called "refill friction stir spot welding." for the vehicle's sliding doors. The new technique conserves 40 times more energy, produces fewer emissions and welds 10 times stronger than other methods.

Yuri Hovanski, BYU manufacturing engineering professor, oversaw the project with some of his students. They were able to publish papers detailing their process with the Society of Automotive Engineers International and the Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing.

Teams of BYU nursing students and faculty had the opportunity to present their research in September at the Association for Leadership Science in Nursing International Conference in Texas.

One research team presented research on the value of large-scale, mass casualty simulations in developing disaster-competent nurse leaders. The other team presented on caregiver support and healthcare leaders’ perspectives on medical errors.

Some of the students said presenting to professionals helped increase their confidence and show just how amazing the BYU nursing program is.
