Creativity for all: BYU's Prototyping Lab

Creativity for all: BYU's Prototyping Lab

All students and faculty can unleash their creative side in the Prototyping Lab at the BYU Engineering Building through metalworking, 3-D printing, laser cutting and more.

The lab, which is located in the building's basement, provides lathes, 3-D printers, and myriad other tools for any project.

If you need a part for a machine, or perhaps just a fun Iron Giant statue, they can make it happen.

"I'm a director of photography…so this is a camera part that I made," Tanner Sisson, a BYU student and prototyping lab customer, said. "Being able to rapid prototype with a 3D printer was really helpful."

Those with training can operate machines themselves. Those with less experience can receive help from a team of trained BYU students.

"If you don’t know anything about the lab but you’d be interested…just come check it out," Ben Erickson, a lab worker, said. "You don’t need an appointment, we’ll love to talk to you, we’ll love to hear about your interests and we’d love to get you learning about the machines we’ve got here."

The lab is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. Walk-ins are accepted.
