BYU College of Nursing alumni partnered with current nursing students for a service project on March 14.
Using supplies donated by nursing alumni, the committee gathered with students in the Kimball Tower to assemble nursing kits for the fourth semester students’ global health project.
“We get a list from the different areas of what they need, put it on an Amazon wishlist and send it out to the alumni of the College of Nursing to donate,” Tiffany Noss, president of the alumni board, said.
With supplies specific to the needs of Zambia, Tonga, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, India and Spain, the health kits will be distributed and administered by students on their fourth semester global health rotation.
Noss commented on the importance of the donated supplies, noting that helping assemble them gives nursing students and alumni a chance to connect.
“Our goal is to keep the alumni connected to the spirit of the Y,” Noss said.
Though this event is one of the many student and alumni events held throughout the year, it is one of the only events specifically designated as a service project.
“I really appreciate events like this,” Kambrie Rankin, a second semester nursing student, said. “It’s nice to see how our professors and the alumni care about us enough to make events like this. It makes the semester more bearable.”
Students and alumni separated and bagged over a hundred donated supplies onto tables labeled with the countries and materials designated for specific needs.
The alumni association also provided refreshments for a social gathering following the service assembly.
BYU nursing graduate of 1997 and alumni member Cherisse Davis came to help with the project and set up the dessert table.
“Of course we had to provide treats, and they’re nursing students, so they need their Diet Coke,” Davis said.
“We’re trying really hard to build up the alumni association and keep them in touch with the students today, so events like today are amazing,” Davis said.
