BYUSA hosts heartbreak-themed Cougar Skate for students

Cougar Skate: A heartbreak-themed escape for BYU students

The Brigham Young University Student Association hosted a heartbreak-themed Cougar Skate on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom.

Flashing lights and themed decorations set the scene for an evening filled with music, laughter and skating.

The Cougar Skate team opted for "Heartbreak Skate" as a theme to help all students—whether single, heartbroken or simply looking for a fun time—to enjoy the party.

“We came up with it as a group,” John Barnes, a team lead for Cougar Skate, said. “We didn’t want to do an exclusively love-themed event for February, so Heartbreak Skate is more laid-back so everyone can enjoy it. I like it.”

The event featured interactive games, such as limbo and Four Corners. Despite the theme, couples still had their moment to glide hand-in-hand during a special couple’s skating session.

“It's good, chill and people can meet new people,” Cameron Jenkins, director of Cougar Skate, said. “One of my favorite things was creating the playlist for the Cougar Skate, getting to choose the songs and things like that.”

Limbo stood out as a highlight of the evening for Barnes.

“I had fun holding the stick and watching people try to go as low as they can," he said.

Jenkins emphasized the event's affordability and accessibility.

“It’s a fun event," he said. "It’s super cheap, like a roller rink. You can come with friends, skate and enjoy the good vibes, good lights and good music.”

The next Cougar Skate will have a 2000s theme and will take place on March 26. For more information, visit https://sclcenter.byu.edu/cougarskate.
