BYUSA oversees 130 clubs that encourage students to explore a wide variety of interests.
“We have everything from sports clubs to some music clubs to just social clubs and skill-based clubs,” said Robyn Damon, BYUSA clubs coordinator. “If everyone looked at all the options, they'd probably find something that they would like to do.”
The clubs allow students to enjoy their hobbies while also finding a community at BYU.
“It's really important for students who are away from home, away from their normal social groups, to come to a huge university like BYU and find a place,” Damon said. “Oftentimes you get strangers, but all they have in common is this shared passion for a certain thing that they want to do, and they get together and then by the end of the semester they are great friends.”
“It's an opportunity for people to get involved, find their own little community here at BYU and do what they love,” said Jonathan Barker, the new vice president of clubs.
“The most valuable thing that BYU students could get from clubs this year is a passion for getting involved,” Barker said. “When we come together in group settings, it gives us more empathy, more joy and more love for the community that we're a part of.”
BYUSA volunteers will be hosting events such as Clubs Rush and Spookify the Y during the fall semester, as well as weekly club nights to inform students about the various activities.
