BYU Yo-yo Club creates community for students

BYU has the perfect club for all those wanting to learn some cool yo-yo tricks. Members of the BYU Yo-yo Club unwind and find community by “throwing” together.

Sadie Noel first attended the BYU Yo-yo Club as a freshman. She is now the club’s vice president.

“I think there’s a chemical release of endorphins in my brain when I yo-yo because it just feels so good,” Noel said.

That good feeling is what the yo-yo club is all about. Noel said their goal is to help people relieve stress and find joy through yo-yoing.

“I honestly think it’s one of the best things you can do for mental health and to relieve stress, it’s just amazing,” Noel said.

Noel admitted she was not overly impressed the first time she came to the yo-yo club. Her conversion moment came when she saw someone perform a trick called the "Eli Hop."

“When I saw that I was like, 'That’s it, I have to learn that, like right now, like right away because that is so cool,'” she said.

Noel said she now yo-yos for about two hours every day.

“I don't just yo-yo during that time. I’ll be listening to scriptures, I’ll be waiting in line, I’ll be talking to people, it’s just whatever I’m doing I usually have my yo-yo out,” Noel said.

Noel's love of yo-yoing is infectious. She recently introduced Karalena Robinson to the club. Robinson said she wasn’t very good at yo-yoing when she first attended the club, but she was determined to practice and picked up a few tricks.

“I think too often we get stuck in our habits and our hobbies and we don’t take time to try something new,” Robinson said.

The club is preparing for a performance showcase on Nov. 21 as part of care week.

Head to the Wilkinson Student Center on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. to give the yo-yo club a try.
