Students gathered on Valentine’s Day in the Wilkinson Center to learn about healthy relationships and meet new friends.
Students gathered for some speed friendshipping and waffles at the BYU Title IX office’s event. BYU Deputy Title IX Coordinator Abigail Morrison said they are raising awareness of the resources the office has to offer.
The event started with a presentation on healthy relationships.
“We’re talking a little about what healthy relationships can look like for people and, hopefully, fostering a place for people to make connections and learn a little bit about what a healthy relationship can look like for them,” Morrison said.
Tables were filled with candy and conversation starters. The speed friendshipping participants got to know each other for a few minutes and then rotated seats.
BYU student Jamin Thompson said he heard about the event from a friend.
“I walked in and I sat down, and I made a lot of friends and it was honestly really cool. It was a good experience,” Thompson said.
Thompson found that there is always another question you can ask to get to know someone better, he said.
“I think today helps me get a better understanding that everyone has a story, and that there's always something you can learn about someone and connect with them on a personal level, and that's really special,” Thompson said.
BYU student Madelyn Johnson said it was too hard to resist the free food.
“I’m here today because there’s free waffles, and I want to eat waffles,” Johnson said.
She also really values friendships, she said.
“I think friendships are important because that’s what makes life worth living,” Johnson said.
