Wizards, witches and Whos from Whoville alike all joined together for a spooky dance filled with food and fun on Halloween night.
2024 was the second annual Fright Lights Halloween party hosted by BYU and was a big hit with the students who attended.
“I love the music. It makes you want to dance and I also like that we got food and hot chocolate. It was really good,” BYU student Lucero Otero said.
A selling point for many students to come was having DJ Scotty J, the same DJ from the popular Howl Halloween party hosted at Utah State University. He brings in thousands of students each year.
Although students did love the music, Seth Childs, a BYU student, said he wished there had been more Halloween songs.
This big event was put on by the BYU Student Service Association and led by Michelle Park, BYUSA’s holiday director. About 50 volunteers came together to brainstorm ideas, decide on the food, put up decorations and ensure the safety of the students. Park was especially grateful for those who joined in to help.
“I could not do this by myself,” Park said.
Safety was BYUSA’s number one priority while planning for the event. As students left the party, BYUSA volunteers encouraged students to use BYU’s Safe Walk feature, a tool that allows students to have their location monitored by BYU security and call for emergency assistance if needed.
Park was glad to be able to help host an event that prioritized both fun and safety.
“I’m going to be really happy about the fact that I was able to create a place where all of my friends, or like groups can go. Where they can have fun and have it be a quality event, but not have to worry,” Park said.
Beryl Peña, a fellow BYUSA volunteer, enjoyed the experience of planning the Fright Lights Dance and providing a fun atmosphere for BYU students.
“We could spend our evening going to other parties, going to things that our friends hold, but we enjoy being here because there’s genuinely no greater joy than serving our students,” Peña said.
Peña’s hope is that students will attend the BYUSA events and be inspired to come and serve alongside the other volunteers.
