BYU Software Training Lab offers free tech classes

Many BYU students walk through the library every day without noticing the hidden gem on the fourth floor.

Learning things like 3D design or video editing is just a few steps away in BYU's Software Training Lab.

The software training lab’s manager, Garrett Boden, says they offer one-on-one help and hour-long software classes to BYU students, faculty, and staff.

"We break it down for you and go step by step," Boden said. “So, it kind of breaks down that barrier of entry so that they can be like, okay, this isn’t as complicated as it may seem."

Two student trainers lead each class and help patrons every step of the way. Student trainer lead Brooke Harris says the skills students learn in the lab aren’t just for the classroom.

"The skills are not only for class projects and school, but they're also for life," Harris said. "I learned Photoshop a couple of years ago, and ever since I've been the one to edit my family's Christmas photos and stuff like that."

Boden says the software training lab is the go-to spot for accessible learning, whether you’re exploring an Adobe product, iPad illustration or Excel.

"If you look online and a class isn’t available one month," Boden said, "keep looking ... because we switch it up."

Still unsure? Harris has one more reason to give it a try.

"Well, it's free," Harris said, "so everyone should be taking a free class at the Software Training Lab."
