BYU Jazz Legacy Band pays tribute to Black American composers

The BYU Music Building hosts an array of weekly performances. One band in particular took its audience back to 1920s America with their swinging music and lively concerts.

The BYU Jazz Legacy Band payed tribute to Black American composers this Black History Month by singing and performing their songs.

This February, eight students are doing something special. They are paying homage to Black Americans who shaped the world of jazz.

The band performed ten songs and Director Brian Woodbury explained the significance behind each one.

Jenna Lambourne is the band’s lead singer. She says she was touched while studying about the composer’s songs she covered.

Lambourne's older sister says she felt inspired hearing the music and learning about their experiences.

This was the band's first time performing this specific setlist. Their future performances can be found on the BYU School of Music website.
